To me, writing is like breathing. Natural and necessary. I experience a palpable bliss that arises from the writing process. This is the feeling I want my writing to inspire in others: joy, hope, a widening of perspective of who and why we are. My process for writing poetry is diverse. Sometimes it feels like taking dictation and when I get to the last word I am stunned. Other times, I have a title and a bit of a plan and work it out. And then, sometimes it becomes like trying to crack open a geode. When I teach I encourage students to find their own voices and not to copy mine or anyone else’s. What is their perspective? What do they know? What do they wish they knew? I challenge them to be real. By turning off the rational/ego mind, which defines everything into right/wrong, good/bad, we can turn to intuition to silence the inner critic and allow ourselves to join in the dance of creation. I welcome opportunities to create and present dynamic classes, workshops, and lectures.
I earned my MFA in Creative writing from Brooklyn College. As an English professor, I have taught a wide variety of courses, including "Perspectives from Outside of the Box," which examines works of magical realism. I have helped students to not only find their writing voice, but to become aware of who they are and their place in the world outside of the classroom. My writing has appeared in regional and national publications. I currently have ten books listed on Amazon.com. My podcast, Mystic Musings with Tobie Hewitt, is available on iTunes, Stitcher, iHeart Radio, and other outlets.
