Today we stand together on our portion of the planet and watch the sun disappear behind the moon. We may express silent awe, cheer, or even tear up a bit. We will do so without panic. We know the moon will swipe past and the sun will reappear. It’s quite a spectacle and deserves our attention if for nothing else than its rare occurrence. We should pause and turn our attention to what is happening around us. Where we stand will grow dark. The birds will stop singing. We will experience a deep stillness and quiet that connects us intimately to those earliest humans, to feel that moment as they did, but without the fear and trepidation they may have felt, not knowing if this was the end of all that they knew. We stand aware it is not an end, but perhaps we can acknowledge it as a shared event through which we can gain a new sense of connection to each other.
