Sometimes life can feel like a hurdle race in which the hurdles are spaced too closely for the racer to gain sure footing or catch his or her breath. It is the perception that life is a race or that there is a finish line one must reach before anyone else that adds to the feeling that every challenge or instance of change is a criticism of one’s ability to succeed. This perception can raise one’s adrenaline level—a physical response to fear—in order to rise to the highest of some artificially created definition of achievement. When a challenge occurs, we need to stop and take a deep breath and remember we are essential spirits in the interdependent web.
